So now you know. Panic attacks rocked my world and threatened my sanity, but I’m thrilled to say that by God’s grace and with some changes in diet and other habits, I no longer suffer with panic episodes!
When in the midst of my season of panic, I searched the internet for any possible glimmer of hope and help. I found many sites touting solutions, but all for a (hefty) price. Now, if you’re anything like I am, the last thing you need is to add to your panic by overspending on some mysterious miracle solution, what’s more, totally unproven.
I hope, by writing this, to give you real solutions, FREE, not more problems!
I list a number of action items below. Each one will help in some capacity, but some bring greater results, and the combination of all will have the most lasting effect. These solutions may seem simple and unpretentious, and that’s because they are, but don’t underestimate the potential results of making these changes in your life! They have given me complete freedom from panic attacks.
1) If your panic attacks cause diarrhea to the degree that you are getting very little nutrition, stop eating all sugar and wheat flour. That means don’t eat bread, cookies, crackers, cake, or pizza. You CAN help your system recover by eating (consuming) only beef or chicken broth cooked with a small amount of grated carrot—this may take a couple of days or longer. You will know when you can begin to add more solid food because the diarrhea will cease.
2) Clear your conscience. Yep, I’m serious—dig back through all the closets in your heart and mind, bring out those skeletons, and toss them in a heap. Confess sin to your spouse or to whomever else you’ve sinned against, and certainly confess sin to your loving father. Don’t underestimate the importance of this step!
3) Cry out to God--Psalm 34:17 “The righteous cry, and the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” Crying out entails more than prayer. It means crying ALOUD, mourning your sin, appealing to God for help, singing out with songs of praise.
4) Meditate on God’s word (The Holy Bible). Mama always told you to memorize scripture. She was preparing you for a time of desperation like you’re feeling today. If you didn’t listen to Mom, then read and recite scripture to yourself--and start memorizing today, so that you will have the ammunition to face the Enemy while he attacks! Psalm 145:5 “On the glorious splendor of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.”
3) This may sound a bit redundant, but eliminate all sugar from your diet. This is different from #3 in a subtle way. # 1 emphasizes what to and not to consume in order to stop diarrhea. In this point I urge you to permanently eliminate (or very drastically reduce) heavily processed refined sugars from your diet. Replace bread with corn tortillas and corn bread. (I found many delicious ways to use corn tortillas.) Eventually, you may be able to add some sweeteners again, such as maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, Stevia, and sucanat.
*A note on sugar is in order here: Sugar, along with being destructive, is also addictive. It may seem impossible to eliminate it from your diet, but I’m living proof that you can do it! Initially, you will experience inordinate cravings for your sweet poison, but be resolute and force yourself to say no for one week. You will find, after that time, that saying “no” to sugar becomes MUCH easier! If you want to become informed about the potential destructiveness of sugar, read Sugar Blues by William Duffy.
